Gravity is always pulling. We are always pushing back.
Awareness of this constant interplay is extremely important. We can't expect to move gracefully and efficiently without a healthy and secure relationship to our planet and its gravity.
So, let’s dig a little deeper into grounding.
At the bottom of it all is our feet. Our feet are (for most of us, anyway) the primary point of contact between our body and the earth.
(For our brothers and sisters who utilize any type of mobility device, gravity is certainly an antagonist of yours as well. Understanding our connection to its attraction is crucial for all of us!)
As such, feeling our feet (or any other contact point) is imperative to understanding and developing a good sense of grounding.
Frequently take the time to be aware of -- and really feel -- your feet.
Practice paying attention to your feet. While standing and walking, at work and at play, feel your feet. Remain aware of this contact.
Ensure you contact the ground with your whole foot. Spread your weight evenly across your foot and your 9 points of contact. Feel these 9 points. Feel your feet meeting gravity.
This may take some practice. Many of us have lost a conscious connection to our feet.
(TIP: If this sensation is new to you, explore it by “gripping in” with your toes. Try to feel each toe at its contact point. Grip with your toes as you stand, and even as you walk. It may take some getting used to, but if you try it for a while, you'll probably notice your feet feel better!)
Working with this idea, you may be surprised to find how little attention we pay to our feet.
However, since they are such an integral part of our mobility, it's vital we remain aware of them.
Enjoy this exercise and the sensation of feeling your feet.
And don’t forget to slow down, smell the roses, and wiggle your toes once in a while!
